IN THE WINDOW

I spend a lot of time looking out the windows of my studio. I look at the neighboring buildings, the people on the street, the shadows, the light.

But recently I’ve taken myself out of the studio and down to the corner, where there is a cafe fronted by enormous glass windows. Wherein The Neighbors series I wanted to photograph who we are when alone, with this series I am more curious about who we are when not alone, when in a public crowd. So, standing just 10 feet from the window I photograph the inhabitants eating, drinking, talking, and staring. I don’t know why, but they don’t see me. And they seem as alone as their counterpoints in the apartments stacked above the cafe, concentrating on devices or just gazing at the street, seemingly not seeing. They are non-reactive to me or any other presence in their field of vision, creating a silent tableau of selective blindness and isolation.
