Chewed is a series of color photographs of toys that have been chewed and eviscerated-literally “loved to pieces”–by enthusiastic dogs and cats. A big ape eyeballing his fuzzy runaway arm, a cuddly teddy bear with the squeak-box ripped from its throat, an enticing pink-glazed doughnut revealed to be a rubber sham–all are photographed in celebration of their transformation by an infatuated pet. As in our previous collaboration, Ron Warren and I styled the chewed victims in the style of formal dignified portraits. A number of the resultant photographs were in the book Chewed. Invited contributors, including author Augusten Burroughs; artists Roz Chast, Maira Kalman, and William Wegman; and designer Todd Oldham wrote stories inspired by the subject of their favorite "chewed" photograph.
